Brief Information About The Khakhria Family

Here is some information regarding the family deity of the Khakhriya family, Shri Sikotar Mataji’s temple, the Surapura temple of the Khakhriya family, and details about offerings (Naivedya). (This information is based on what has been received from the elders of the Khakhriya family).

It is said that Moti Veraval was founded during the reign of the then Jam Saheb of Jamnagar, who personally tied the ceremonial toran (auspicious entrance decoration). Initially, the village was home to Mahajan-Thakkar Bhatia community families. After the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, following the disturbances in Karachi, around 400–450 houses of the Lohana community were established here. The history of the village, however, goes back much earlier. At present, the Lohana population has declined to about 150, with roughly 40–50 houses remaining. Apart from the Khakhriya family’s temple, there are temples of other families too, such as Nathwani, Ruparal, Raychura, Ganatra, Somaiya, Kotecha, and Gadhiya families.

The temple of Shri Sikotar Mataji, the family deity of the entire Khakhriya family, is very ancient and located at Moti Veraval. The land for this temple was acquired by Late Shri Chamanbhai Chakubhai Khakhriya of Rajkot and Late Shri Parshuram Devjibhai Khakhriya.

Later, a guesthouse (Atithi Bhavan) was established on 16/03/2007 (Vikram Samvat 2062, Phagan Vad 12, Friday) by Shri Tulsibhai Devjibhai Khakhriya and his family (currently residing in Mumbai) and was dedicated to the entire Khakhriya family.

Two temples of Surapura Dada of the Khakhriya family are located on the banks of the Rangmati River in this village. The first temple was built on 26/10/1976 (Vikram Samvat 2032, Posh Vad 10, Monday) by Shri Kherajbhai Ratanashibhai Khakhriya. The second Surapura Dada temple, next to the first one, was built by the families of Shri Rameshbhai Magnalal Khakhriya, Shri Odhavjibhai Mavjibhai Khakhriya, Shri Ravjibhai Mavjibhai Khakhriya, Shri Bhagwanji Mavjibhai Khakhriya, and Shri Vallabhbhai Mavjibhai Khakhriya. The temple plaques mention that one Surapura Dada was brought from Meravadar, and the other from near Bawariya village close to Veraval.

Recently, the renovation of this temple was sponsored by Shri Parimal Vijaybhai Khakhriya. Electrical fittings like lights and fans were provided by Shri Amit Narendrabhai Khakhriya. Another renovation was done by Shri Vasantbhai Amarshibhai Khakhriya (currently residing in Thareslam). Silver seats for Mataji’s sanctum were donated by another Khakhriya family.

During the reopening ceremony (in Vikram Samvat 2066, Maha Sud-9, Sunday), a special “Madhushanti Havan” was performed along with offerings, a community feast, and festivities. All Khakhriya families participated in large numbers, offering donations and devotional gifts to Mataji. At this occasion, the festival/trust of Shri Sikotar Mataji was formally established with the consent of the respected elders of the Khakhriya family. Details of trustees and executive members are recorded.
